‎”Theatre of Dreams – How the Arts help bring communities closer” By Jennifer Perkins

It has long been suggested that one way in which humans differ from other animals is in our ability to appreciate the arts and theatre. Flowers and plants are said to grow stronger in the presence of classical music; wild animals become less aggressive when confronted by the haunting sounds of Beethoven, Mozart or Tchaikovsky. This is now scientific fact, and millions of dollars have been invested into discovering exactly what it is about music that makes our milk tastier and our vegetables crunchier. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that humans who partake in the arts will glean untold benefits. Being part of a group and feeling needed is valuable to us all, as is being able to exercise and fulfil our time productively. However, theatre is much more about exercise and fitting in. The Edinburgh Festival is one example of how, out of the ashes of World War II, the arts flourished. It remains the biggest arts festival on the planet. Millions flock to see the arts each summer and this illustrates how integrated theatre has become in our lives.

Self-Expression

Joining a local theatre company is a great way for teenagers to become involved in their community, and to learn about their own inner talents. The act of being creative and expressing themselves allows people to come to terms with any emotional difficulties they might be experiencing. That isn’t to say that performers are emotional wrecks, but people who perform have the means at hand to let off steam and avoid mental conflict. Theatre and the arts in general have also long been used to help those addicted to alcohol and other drugs. There are many reasons why people become addicted to substances, and for some it is often a gradual process whereby one nightcap over time becomes two, and then three and so on. Before long the problem has escalated out of all proportion. Others take a more direct route and start dabbling with stronger substances. However, many drug addicts claim to have something missing from their lives and this void can be filled by participation in something creative and worthwhile.

Too Expensive

The cost of a night at the theatre is rising, and a West-End or Broadway play or musical preceded by a meal and followed by a few drink would certainly be beyond the financial means of the majority of addicts; for sure it puts a strain on the purse strings of most non-addicts. However, some cities in the UK allowed those people without jobs the opportunity to go to the theatre for a greatly reduced price. Perhaps the logic behind this was that those down on their luck would be most vulnerable to the allure of mind-altering substances, and that by offering the arts as a way of alleviating stress, they would find release in a more constructive manner.

Feel Needed

The good news is that we all do not need to visit Broadway or the West End to take in a show in order to not succumb to the temptations of drugs. Theatre is and has been with us since the beginnings of recorded history. It takes many forms from Noh play or Kabuki theatre in Japan to Scottish country dancing. Bollywood in India is much bigger than Hollywood and Indian movies are regularly seen by audiences numbering staggering proportions.

Watching a live play is more intimate and infinitely more rewarding than going to the movies. Being involved from the onset of something creative and stimulating is good for all of us. We constantly lavish praise on our favourite performers whether they be actors, singers, dancers, painters or otherwise. Why don’t we allow ourselves to experience the feel-good factor once in a while?

Benefits

Most of the benefits of the arts have already been mentioned, but to sum up the theatre especially covers a range of senses. For example, the sets and costumes cover visual art, music sets a mood, the creation of plays and scripts helps the mind to become more creative and performers can express themselves. The study of music has been advocated for children for centuries. Recent studies have proven quite irrevocably that when young kids learn the piano they stimulate the right side of their brains. You don’t have to be addicted to anything to enjoy watching theatre and, for the more adventurous; the chance to take part in something which has the ability to move so many should never be underestimated or overlooked.

(Jennifer Perkins, a free-lance writer, is donating her time and talent to benefit ReVision Theatre patrons as well as those suffering from addiction. She asked that we share this message with our readership, “both for those who need help and for those who have loved ones battling with addiction.” Please comment and let us know how you like Jennifer’s article.)
